Energy Savings Certificates (ESCs) are tradable certificates that recognise eligible reductions in electricity and gas consumption. Created under the NSW Government’s Energy Savings Scheme (ESS), ESCs provide a financial incentive for businesses and households to adopt efficient technologies and upgrades.

How Are ESCs Created?
ESCs can be generated from eligible efficiency upgrades that deliver measurable reductions across industrial, commercial, and residential projects, including equipment upgrades, new installations, and replacement of inefficient systems such as:
Lighting upgrades Air conditioning improvements Water heating systems Refrigeration upgrades
Once completed, the project is reviewed by an Authorised Certificate Provider (ACP) to verify compliance and create the eligible ESCs.
How Organisations Use ESCs
ESCs are classified as “white certificates,” meaning their primary value is linked to verified power savings rather than a transferable carbon or renewable attribute. Once created, they can be traded to generate financial returns and help offset project investment. This allows organisations to monetise their ESCs while retaining the ability to report the verified power and emissions reductions achieved through the project.
